Inspired by the intricate rituals of safeguarding against the malocchio – a potent force believed to be fueled by jealousy and envy – this collection explores the evolution of femininity and connectivity through the symbolism of red and orange ribbons. Drawing from the personal experiences of the artist, whose grandmother sewed red ribbons into the fabric of her life as a shield against the malocchio, the exhibition delves into the legends associated with red strings from a modern perspective. From the Chinese myth of the red string of fate binding destined lovers to the Greek tradition of adorning brides with red scarves as a symbol of fertility, each thread in this narrative intertwines tales of protection, pride, and profound connections. Along with oil paint on canvas, we will also be using porcelain and white stoneware to express the intricate dance of femininity. Vivid underglazes and homemade in-house glazes transform these materials into a canvas that tells a story of the restrictions and strength woven into the fabric of womanhood. With the vibrant motifs of ribbon, our exhibition will capture the essence of a timeless journey. Each stroke of sharp warm-colored lines reflects the constraints inherent to womanhood while also exuding a sense of pride and protection. Join us in shared narratives bound together by the Threads.
