“Remembering to Breathe”
Remembering to Breathe, is about the ebb and flow of the body, the anticipation of grief, and the struggle to process change that I experienced as I examined my relationship with my mother in the year leading up to her death in 2019. The anticipation of her death led me to question the generational connections between our bodies and the impact her existence had in the home where I grew up and what would remain once she was gone. This work includes images and related poems that are both abstract and personal, creating equivalent experiences of bodies in flux and the progression of time and inevitable transformation.
Patricia Swanson grew up in the Pacific Northwest in Lynnwood, WA and is now based in Lafayette, IN. Patricia completed her MFA in Photography from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University in 2017 and was an adjunct photography professor for 8 years. Patricia’s art practice is grounded in a phenomenological approach to image creation that sees photographs both as literal and metaphorical representations of lived experience. Patricia’s work is rooted in personal narratives that use individual experiences as a foundation from which to explore more universal themes such as dreams, memory, aging, and loss.
