Bio
Sloan Marshall is an illustrator, multimedia artist and a serial hobby dabbler. His one true love is crochet; in 2011 he picked up a hook and hasn’t put it down since. Over the last 14 years he has made anything from small things like bags, hats, and scarves, to large projects like blankets, capes and sweaters, and everything in between. In 2020 he completed his first large-scale crochet installation at Healer, a music venue in Indianapolis; a cave-like space made of scraps of his abandoned projects stitched together. This opened up a new realm of possibility for his crochet work in terms of scale and scope, and his June 2025 exhibition at TAF is the next landmark on that path.
I will be hosting a sale at my studio in The Weather Station (658 Main St Suite 212) in tandem with the reception for this show to raise money for the MFA program I’m starting in the Fall. Specific dates/times TBA

Show Description
In the form of soft sculpture, installation, and tapestry, Sloan Marshall presents Soft Portals; a new body of work from Lafayette’s self-proclaimed resident crochet wizard. The collection is the culmination of a long-standing effort to elevate his fiber art practice and push forward the potential of crochet as a fine art medium. Soft Portals is a gateway to a reality less rigid than our own, a celebration of silliness and whimsy as pure aspects of human nature. Much of the work acts as a meditation on the impact that slow art forms can have on subject matter. When the pressure cooker of daily life demands constant productivity and isolation, Soft Portals answers the call with wild imagination and slow intent.
