Valentina was born in Medellín, Colombia in 1999. She feels fortunate to be deeply connected to her Latinx roots, the warmth of her people, the rhythm in her blood, the natural beauty of her homeland, and her musical accent. Valentina has always found herself between art and science and has strived to nurture both areas in her life. She studied engineering at the National University of Colombia and is now pursuing a PhD in atmospheric sciences at Purdue, focusing on extreme weather events and the planetary atmospheric waves associated with them. Meanwhile, art has been her constant refuge, her favorite language, and a way to process her emotions. After some years of seeking harmony between atmospheric sciences and art, she has discovered that, after all, they are not so far apart: for her, both seek to understand and interpret the complexity of chaos.
I work with oil on canvas and oil combined with charcoal on paper to portray people and elements of nature. I especially focus on female expression and corporeality. Through painting, I aim to understand, feel, and embrace deep emotions. I seek to capture the beauty and strength of vulnerability, both my own and that of others. I like to find myself in the bodies and eyes of other women.
Valentina es una mujer nacida Medellín, Colombia en 1999. Se siente afortunada de sus raíces Latinas, del calor de su gente, del sabor en su sangre, de la belleza natural de su tierra, y de su acento cantado. Valentina siempre ha estado en una dualidad entre arte y ciencia y ha decidido impulsar ambas áreas en su vida. Estudió ingeniería en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y ahora cursa un doctorado en ciencias atmosféricas en Purdue, estudiando eventos metereológicos extremos y ondas atmosféricas planetarias asociadas a estos fenómenos. Miestras tanto, el arte ha sido su refugio constante, su lenguaje favorito y una vía para procesar sus emociones. Tras algunos años buscando armonía entre las ciencias atmosféricas y el arte, ha descubierto que, después de todo, no estaban tan separados: para ella, ambos buscan entender e interpretar la complejidad del caos.
Trabajo con óleo sobre lienzo y óleo combinado con carboncillo sobre papel para retratar a personas y elementos de la naturaleza. Me enfoco especialmente en la expresión y corporalidad femenina. A través de la pintura, busco entender, sentir y abrazar emociones profundas. Busco captar la belleza y la fuerza de la vulnerabilidad, propia y ajena. Me gusta encontrarme a mí misma en cuerpos y miradas de otras mujeres.
